OCR feature in Google Docs

Google Docs has introduced a new feature- OCR, which stands for Optical Character Recognition. OCR is used to convert the image of text file into editable character. Google has long back mastered this technology. In fact, when I was in the final years of my Engineering, that time only Google has developed a successful prototype of OCR technology. Google Books- an application which let you search contents of any copyrighted book has already been using this technology.

Possible usage of this technology

First and foremost application is what Google is already doing-going into collaboration with world's biggest libraries and bringing the voluminous books into online public domain which could be accessible by all. The good old knowledge of the world will be one more step closer to us.

Government can convert its tons of file data into easily accessible and editable online data. In this way, Government will have the data while the public will have the ease.It will certainly reduce the usage of papers thus benefiting company by saving and environment by saving papers.

Perhaps, I could use my cell phone to capture the images of class notes of others and modify it on Google Docs thus eliminating the use of copying and carrying of notes. Now My macbook will be enough for all the notes!!!!

Marketing is the key behind all activites.

There are two things about which i always have a feeling that is not happening in the rightest possible manner.
First fact that the world is driven by markets.
It should never have happened. The world can better be driven by social factors or moreover political factors rather than marketing factors. Social factors because people live in society, people are bound to each other through society. This is the society which should determine what they want what they don want. These are the social factors which should dictate terms of the world. We see political forces as a little refinement to the forces running the society. They have a task for the welfare of society, they are supposed to do better deeds to society. For example, when the world was being explored by different countries in 15th century, the main purpose was to get political advantage by gaining access to scarce resources. They were not meant for traders. Other than political factors , the religious factors holds more responsibility. But this is no longer the case.
In the present context, marketing forces are responsible for the major changes. Major political decisions are taken to gain some marketing mileage. For example, the attack on Iraq was a purely marketing decision. Similarly, ties with China or India with US is mostly a marketing maneuver. Multinational giants are forcing political forces to adapt to suit it needs. Marketers are influencing all the major decisions.

2nd point is, The role of technology. Why n how the world is not driven by technological innovations. Why the center of power is in SEZ in stead of RnD labs?
This all can be attributed to rising capitalism in the world.

Resumption

Its been so long, I had totally been out of touch with the blog writing. Two factors contributed to this absence, Hectic schedule and my occasional lethargy.

Summer placement is on, the heat is taking the toll. I am becoming sober.

I have few plans in my head, but three constraints are stopping the execution- time, resources and a proper framework to present the case.

I want rest from this life. I want to be alone to unleash my creativity. I want to travel to new places. I want to meet my older friends.

Today is Deeds BirthDay. As usual, I will be the last one to wish her.

Here I am, This is Me

Dated 28rd June,

Monday

Finally, the good old time is revived. I joined the college again, this time IMT, Ghaziabad. Now i will have abundant leisure time again which I lacked in MTC. I will be getting plenty of articles of my choice to read. Now there will be no technical stuff and incomplete words based code. Hee haaa..

I joined the IMT on Sunday i.e on 22nd Jun and all the night PDP (personality Development program) went on. I could not sleep at 4 o clock. And the next day, I had to attend the Yoga early in the morning at 5:15. The Yoga ordeal lasted 2 hours and got ready for the Orientation program. Lots of lecture about IMT from different luminaries of IMT and most of them boring. I opted for the farthest chair in the corner and was dozing all the time.

Surinder Singh Prem. IMT Alumni and MD Reebok India's speech was inspiring. He was the only limelight of whole days' affair. The presentation session lasted at zero hour and then same PDP started off. I feel bored here.

Is childhood obesity linked to watching television?

Is childhood obesity linked to watching television?

You know it is but now you have some kind of scientific evidence.

A study published in the April 2006 issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine showed that children may eat an extra 167 calories for every hour of television they watched.

167 calories for EVERY HOUR of Television!!

That amounts to a whole pile of body fat over a year.

In our war against childhood obesity television has become a number one enemy. That television is there lurking in wait for you and your children in your living room, even in your bedrooms. You visit your friends homes and there it is again - our enemy the television just itching to leap out and inflict the scourge of childhood obesity on our community - one innocent child at a time.

What's the solution?

Turn off that damn TV set and engage in some good old fashioned fun with your kids.

That will help enormously in raising a healthy child.

Smash the television watching and the childhood obesity in our community by enjoying some physical exercise instead of sitting in front of that killer of humanity.

In my next post I'll explain how television could be an even worse enemy in our battle against childhood obesity for a reason you probably never even suspected.

Until then remember that we're in a war against childhood obesity and enemy number one is that television.

Travelling Solution

  • Today I read an interview of Jeffrey Archer in The Hindu. He called Delhi a green city because once he looked out of his conference hall window and found the greenery around and so he called Delhi a green city. Its just a laughable things about the sensibility of a poet.
  • Three important contributors to pollution in Delhi is 1)Rise in Population 2) Increased Economic and Industrial Activities, and 3) presence of so many personal vehicles. With rapid rise of population and corresponding economic activities, the infrastructure could not maintain the pace so it is actually crammed.
  • Its been more than four months since I had been in Delhi. The traffic conditions are getting worse day by day. The pollution is getting worse day by day. The pollution level has reached already to the precng level. The traffic is so much congested that the average speed has reduced to 12 kmph. Inadequate and sub standard traveling facilities are forcing people to own their vehicle. Around 70% od ppulation is contributed by vehicle. Finally, Delhi is considred one of the ten worst polluted cities in the world.
  • It is not that the govt has not taken steps. Delhi has the largest CNG fleet in the world, close to 1 lac vehicles run on CNG out of which 10k are buses. Metro rail has given access to fast and economical access to public transport. BRT corridor is being developed. But these changes are insufficient. The Govt should be making more of this kind of effort.
  • Firstly, it has to act in the direction of providing good housing facilities which must include following amenities.
  1. 3-4 storey building
  2. Rain Water harvesting
  3. Nearness to local buy outs
  4. Cycling trek
  5. Wider and cleaner roads with greenery around
  6. Presence of nearby community centre.

All of these will reduce dependence on vehicles which are the major contributor to pollution.

2ndly, The Govt should charge some amount for owning vehicle. The permission for buying vehicles should be given only once the to be owners show the parking space available for the new vehicle. This move will simply free up space in gallis and Muhallas. Presently, most the gullis are occupied by parked cars.

3rdly, Delhi needs metro in all of the newly developed area. Let people reside out of main town and provide them a faster and convenient transport facilities. It will reduce the burden on Delhi. The Satellite towns like Gurgaon, faridabad and Ghaziaad etc should be connected with metro.

Govt should form dual norm policy for selling of petrol and diesel. Personal vehicle owner should be sold petrol without subsidy. It will desist people from buying new vehicles.

At the same time Govt should also charge some amount from vehicle owners annually( may be in the form of pollution tax) say Rs 2000 per vehicle. Or some kind of surcharge can be clubbed with the price of Diesel or petrol. Like every liter of petrol carries a surcharge of say 50 paise. In this way, it will be a sort of penalty for those who use the their personal vehicles more and those people who use their vehicles less will be saving some taxes.

These solution, if applied, will have profound impact.
